A vaginal yeast infection also known as candidiasis or thrush is a fungal infection that is caused by a fungus called candida albicans.
A healthy vagina has a proper balance of both bacteria and yeast cells. The bacteria keeps the yeast cells in check, and the yeast cells keep the bacteria in check.
Yeast infection occurs when there are more yeast than bacteria in the vagina.
The yeast cells thrive in moist and dark environment that the vagina provides.
Some women have recurring cottage cheese discharge just before their period when estrogen is at its lowest.
