Spotting After Ovulation: 6 Reasons it Happens

It is not uncommon for women to experience light bleeding or spotting after ovulation.

This could be frightening ​if this is the first time you are experiencing such.

Spotting is different from your normal period in color and in quantity.

It usually comes as light pink or brown discharge and does not contain red blood clot that you see in mensturation.

​So I am here to answer the question to why you have a brown discharge after ovulation.

6 Causes of Bleeding After Ovulation before period

1. ​Sign of Pregnancy

One common question women ask "is light pinkish discharge or spots few after ovulation a sign of pregnancy?"

Spotting a few days after ovulation may mean you are pregnant, if you had an unprotected sex during your fertile days.

This type of spotting is referred to as implantation spotting which may be accompanied by implantation cramping.

It usually occurs when a fertilized ​egg is trying to implant itself to the walls of the uterus.

The fertilized egg ​also known as an embryo, burrows its way into the uterine lining.

This burrowing causes light spotting or bleeding.​

The color is usually light pinkish or light brownish and raises no cause for an alarm.​

Spotting during implantation usually occurs about a week to your period.​

If you are trying for a baby, then this is an exciting time for you.

But before you rush off to buy an early pregnancy kit, I will advise you to wait for a few days until you have a missed period to test for pregnancy.

If not pregnant then you could be spotting for the following other reasons


2. ​Problem with the cervix

The cervix is the narrow opening between the uterus and the vagina.

Problems can occur to the cervix such ​ the HPV (Human Papillomavirus).

HPV is a leading course of cervical cancer and it is a sexually transmitted disease.​

One of the symptoms of HPV or cervical fibroid is a Mid cycle spotting. ​

You should seek the help of a doctor immediately if you have a heavy vaginal bleeding anytime between your periods.​


3. ​ENDOMETRIOSIS

Another cause of vaginal bleeding is endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissues of the uterus lining starts growing outside the uterus.

Women who have endometriosis, usually experience ​lower abdominal pain and cramps.

They also experience pain after sex, vaginal bleeding during before menstrual period starts. ​

One of the common symptoms of Endometriosis ​is abnormal vaginal bleeding.


4. ​HORMONAL IMBALANCE

Having an imbalance between the female hormones estrogen and progestrone is one of the causes of spotting or bleeding between periods.

Various factors such as using hormonal contraceptive, thyroid gland problems, birth control pills can affect your female hormones hereby causing hormonal imbalance.​


5. ​You Have OVulated

After ovulation spotting could be a sign that ovulation has occured.

Some women experience light blood any time ovulation takes place. This can last for up to 2 days and it's colour is usually light pinkish or light orange.

Although scientist have not really discovered why some women bleed during ovulation. But it is said to be because of how the matured egg gets released or burst out from the ovary.

This can cause cramps and bleeding for some women.

Some scientist also believe that at ovulation, the estrogen hormone is at it's peak, which could cause light spotting or brown discharge for some women.


6. ​ovarian cyst or fibroids

Another cause of bleeding after your ovulation has happened is Ovary cyst or Fibroids.

Ovarian Cysts are fluid filled sac that develops in the ovary of a woman.

Ovarian Cyst is formed when the follicle refuses to break to release an egg.

The fluid inside the follicle then forms a cysts on the ovary.

Attimes these ovarian cysts may rupture and cause pelvic pain and bleeding.

Other symptoms of ovarian cyst include: pain in the ovaries, nausea and vomiting.​

Spotting A day after ovulation

Spotting one day after ovulation could be a sign that ovulation has taken place.

Ovulation is usually accompanied by mild cramps and light spotting.

The spotting is due to the follicle bursting open or breaking to ​release an egg.

If you are trying to conceive, it is too way too early to know if this is implantation bleeding or not.

I will advise you to relax because stressed about if you are pregnant or not sometime causes infertility for some couples.

Spotting 2 days after ovulation... Am i pregnant?

If you have brown spotting 2 days after ovulation, and you are trying for a baby. It is still to early to know if conception has occurred or not.

It is possible for you to have light spotting or brown discharge at ovulation, signalling that ovulation as taken place.

Some women never experience this​ at all. While some women have very light spots with ovulation every month.

Spotting 3 days after ovulation

It takes about 3 - 4 days for the egg to slowly travel down the fallopian tube.

So at this time the ​fertilised egg is still on its way to through the fallopian tube to the uterus(womb).

Some women feel cramps as the egg moves down the fallopian tube.

Implantation blood mainly occur when the egg is embedding it's self to the womb.

Spotting 4 days after ovulation

Spotting four days after ovulation could mean you are pregnant and you mis calculated your ovulation date.

You may have ovulated few days before you thought you did.

If you are trying to get pregnant, the best thing to do is wait until your period is missed to test for pregnancy​.

For best results wait for a week after your missed period.​

Spotting 5 days after ovulation

Spotting 5 DPO (days past ovulation) may mean you are pregnant. Some women miss calculate the days in which they ovulate.

For example they might have ovulated 2 days earlier than they thought.

So you may actually be seven days past ovulation.

Implantation spots occurs in most cases 6-7 days past ovulation. But for some other women it occurs 6-12 after ovulation.

Spotting 6 days after ovulation

You may be pregnant if you are spotting and cramping 6 days after ovulation and you had sex around your ovulation or fertile days.

Implantation bleeding usually happen around 6-7 days after you have ovulated if the egg was fertilised by a sperm.

If you test for pregnancy around now you might get a false or negative pregnancy result.

Because the hcg hormone that is detected by most early pregnancy test ​is not yet present in a detectable quantity.

I will strongly advise you wait for another week before you test for pregnancy.​

Spotting A week after ovulation

If spotting a week to when your period is due which is the same as a week after ovulation has occurred.

Then their is a high probability that what you are experiencing ​is the newly formed embryo trying to attached itself to the lining of the womb.

This would be the house for you baby for the next 9 months. So congratulations.

Implantation spotting may also be accompanied by menstrual like cramps or pain​s.

Spotting 8 days after ovulation

Spotting 8 or 9 days past ovulation may be an early sign of pregnancy.

About 1/3 of women spot when the fertilised egg attaches it's self to the uterine lining.

This is almost at the same time you are expecting your monthly period.

In a few days time you would be able to know if you have a missed period or not.

If you test for pregnancy at the time your period is missed and you get a negative pregnancy result.

I will advise you wait again until a week after your missed period to test again.​

When to see a doctor

If you have any form of heavy bleeding or continuous spotting with a lower abdominal cramp that is unbearable then you should see your gynaecologist or doctor as soon as possible.
