Sore or tender breast is a common sign of pregnancy, sign of ovulation, Premenstrual syndrome (PMS). But getting a sore breast after your period is over can be confusing and leave you worried.
Breast pain is also known as mastalgia, is a condition that affects every woman at one point in their lives. Your breast may feel heavy or sore. The pain may feel like a dull ache, stabbing or burning sensation in the breast or underarm.
There are two types of breast pain: cyclical and non-cyclical. Cyclical breast pain is associated with a woman's menstrual cycle. Non-cyclical breast is not.
Cyclical breast pain is common before your period begins and usually goes away after your period is over.
So what causes post period breast soreness.
Breast are very sensitive to hormonal changes in the body because they consist of hormone receptors. These hormonal receptors makes the breast very responsive to hormonal fluctuations in the body.
Breast changes coincide with a woman's menstrual cycle.
As the estrogen and progesterone hormone, prepares the body for ovulation and pregnancy each month, the breast is also preparing itself for ovulation and pregnancy.
During the first half of the menstrual cycle, the estrogen hormone is produced by the ovaries. The estrogen hormone is responsible for fuller breast and tender breast before ovulation. This hormone continues to rise until ovulation. After ovulation has occurred the progesterone hormone takes over the second half of the menstrual cycle.
The progesterone hormone further provides blood flow to the beast which may cause heaviness or soreness.
If the level of the estrogen and progesterone hormone remains high during and after your mensuration. Then breast tenderness or sore boobs after your period is possible.
When a woman gets pregnant both the estrogen and progesterone hormone remains high. This is why breast pain or fuller breast is an early sign of pregnancy.
2. Birth control pills
Some of the side effects of using breast control pills are breast enlargement or tenderness. Most women take birth control pills to avoid pregnancy. But it takes the body a while to adjust to the new level of hormones provided by this contraceptives.
Study has shown that stress affects our hormone levels. This can in turn affect cause breast pain. Increased level of stress hormone cortisol affects other female hormones.
4. Consuming excessive caffeine
For some people caffeine causes pain in the breast as the progress through their menstrual cycle. This pain is usually associated with hormonal changes and PMS.
Caffeine increase the level of cortisol. Increased level of cortisol leads to breast tenderness.
5. Post Menstrual Syndrome
Just like premenstrual syndrome. Many women now complain of post menstrual syndrome. Post menstrual syndrome are a group of symptoms that a woman experiences after her period is finished.
Common Post menstrual syndromes are:
- Nausea after period
- Cramps after Period
- Lower back pain
- Lower abdominal pain
- Mood swings
Breast changes is one of the symptom of the perimenopause phase. Changes in hormonal changes and menstrual cycle signifies the onset of perimenopause.
Perimenopause is a period of several years before a woman's period ceases.
Other symptoms of this phase are: vaginal dryness, hot flashes.
It is in rare conditions that a woman is on her period while pregnant. Some women have vaginal bleeding while pregnant. while tender or sore breast is one of the signs of pregnancy, it is difficult to make conclusions that you are pregnant using this alone.
Take a pregnancy test to confirm. If you are worried or if the pain is unbearable see your doctor. Your doctor will carry out an examination and perform a blood test to check if pregnant.
Remember there are many causes of breast pain which could happen at any point of your menstrual cycle.
One of the symptoms of menopause is painful breast, vaginal dryness, irregular periods, hot flashes. PMS symptoms are similar to perimenopause symptoms. This is because they are both controlled by hormones.

Sore breast a week after period may mean pregnancy or ovulation. If you has a light period known as implantation spotting than you may be pregnant and breast tenders is an early symptom of pregnancy.
If you had you normal heavy period, early ovulation may be a cause of sore boobs 1 week after you period is over.
Remember stress, weight gain, hormonal imbalance, birth control pills can also cause pain in the breast in menstrual cycle.
Sore breast 2 weeks after period is a sign of ovulation. Ovulation happens around 12 - 16 days after the first day of your last period. During ovulation, the level of your estrogen hormone rises. The increase in the level of estrogen makes the breast appear fuller. And also enlarges the milk ducts which in turn causes tenderness or soreness.
