What is a Period?
A Period also known as menstruation is part of the female menstrual cycle where she bleed for a few days from her vagina.
A period can last from anywhere between 3-8 days long. For most women it lasts for 5 days. And it usually occurs every 28 days for most women but it be between every 24-35 days.
What is PMS?
PMS means Premenstrual syndrome. And it refers to the emotional and physical symptoms that women experience one or two weeks to their mensuration.
This refers to changes such as:
- Breast Soreness and Tenderness
- Mood Swings
- Lower abdominal cramps
- Bloating or Gassy
- Stomach pains
- Low sexual Libido
PMS symptoms get better or disappear when you see your menses.
Causes of PMS BUT NO PERIOD
1. Early symptoms of PREGNANCY
The most common reason why women feel like their period is about to start but no blood is due to pregnancy. Early pregnancy symptoms is very similar to the signs you get when you are about to start your period.
For example your breast may feel tender and sore just before your period is about to begin, your breast may also feel the same way when you have conceived.
In addition the feeling of lower abdominal cramps might actually be implantation cramping which is an early sign of pregnancy.
Most pregnancy symptoms are similar to pre period signs such as :
- Nausea and Vomiting(morning sickness)
- Food Aversion and Craving
- Breast tenderness
- Fatigue and Tiredness
Polycystic ovary Syndrome is caused by hormonal imbalance. Either having too much estrogen and progesterone or having too little.
Women with PCOS have irregular periods or no period (anovulation) for a long period of time.
3. Intrauterine Device (IUD)
One of the causes of cramping but no period is IUD. IUD also known as coils is a birth control device that is put into the uterus of a woman, who wants to avoid getting pregnant.
It can come as a plastic or as a copper device.
It is not uncommon for women to feel cramps in the first 3 months of using an IUD.
4. ON THE PILL
Some women take hormonal birth control pills as a contraceptive to avoid getting pregnant.
It is not unusual for women on birth control pills to have light periods or no a missed period but negative pregnancy test.
They may feel like their period is about to start without seeing any blood.
Your body tries to adjust to the hormones from the pills as it disrupts the natural balance of hormones in the body.
Iron deficiency also known as anaemia is one of reasons for a missed period or a scanty one. If a woman has no vaginal bleeding in a month, it may be due to low level of hemoglobin in the body.
One of the symptoms of anaemia is irregular period. Anaemia could be caused by poor diet such as lack of iron, folic acid or vitamin B12.
Period Symptoms but no Period Could I be pregnant?
Yes you could be pregnant. Early pregnancy symptoms are similar to PMS. The difference between PMS and pregnancy symptoms is that PMS goes away as soon as your period starts. Whereas Pregnancy symptoms lead to missed period and a positive pregnancy test.
For example, during implantation you may experience mild cramping and very light spotting. This may be confused for the onset of mensuration.
Be patient, take a pregnancy test around a week after you have a late period.
I feel Like I have my period but no blood?
Feeling like AF is about to start but no bleeding. Many women experience this. Several factors can be the reason of no period blood.
Pregnancy, hormonal imbalance, PCOS, IUD, Birth control pills, endometriosis, Anaemia may be responsible for this.
Menstruation Symptoms but no Period Negative Pregnancy Test
No period but negative pregnancy test may be caused by low hormone level. You may still be pregnant but the level of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone levels is too low to be detectable by the home pregnancy test you are using.
You may want to consider, visiting your doctor for a blood test to further test for pregnancy.
Ectopic Pregnancy is yet another reason for a negative pregnancy test but no mensuration. Ectopic pregnancy happens when the fertilised egg implants itself to the fallopian tube instead of the uterus.

Period Symptoms but no period White discharge
If you are having a white discharge instead of your period, it may be caused by the following:
- Faulty Pregnancy Test
- Excessive exercise
Period Symptoms but no period not pregnant
Having mensuration symptoms and not pregnant may be due to hormonal imbalance which can cause nausea and cramp-like feelings.
It could also be as a result of contraceptives, PCOS, rapid weight loss, corpus luteum cyst, uterine complications.
Why do I have cramps but no Period?
You may be cramping without seeing any vaginal bleeding due to the following reasons:
- Ovarian Cyst
- Inflammatory Bowel disease
- Ovarian Cancer
Period symptoms without period can also be a sign of menopause.
