Types of Fertility Drugs
There are various types of infertility drugs used in treating infertility in women depending on the cause of the infertility and what exactly is being treated.
The commonly used fertility medication can be divided into the following groups:
- Clomiphene or Clomiphene Citrate(Clomid)
- Hormonal Injection- Gonadotropins or Human Chorionic Gonadotropins
- Bromocriptine(Parlodel) or Carbergoline(Dostinex)
So let me explain each one of the fertility drugs and when they are used.
1. Clomiphene Citrate or Clomid
Clomiphene is the most common fertility drug used in treating women with ovulation problems.
Clomiphene works by telling the pituitary gland to make hormones that causes the ovaries to make matured eggs.
The two hormones in question are the :
FSH- Follicle Stimulating hormone
LH - Luteinizing Hormone
Clomid is usually the first fertility drug recommended for women who have ovulation problems.
However, not all women get pregnant after using clomid.
A Study has shown that 80% of women ovulate after using clomid and about 40% of the 80% are able to get pregnant.
Therefore, your Doctor is likely to prescribe another or a more advanced fertility drug if unable to get pregnant after using Clomiphene Citrate(Clomid).
This is after a woman doesn't get pregnant after taking Clomid for 6 menstrual cycle.
2. Hormonal Injection (Gonadotropins & HCG)
Hormonal Injections drugs may be prescribed next for women who do respond or get pregnant after using Clomid.
The name of the hormonal Injection given are Gonadotropins and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG).
The HCG Injection is injected directly under the woman's skin to trigger the follicles to produce healthy eggs.
Also HCG helps in ovulation to stimulate the release of the matured egg or eggs.
3. Bromocriptine or Cabergoline
Bromocriptine is administered when the cause of infertility is due to a higher amount of Proclatin hormone in the blood.
Proclatin hormone is the breastfeeding hormone. Having a high level of prolacting can stop ovulation in women.
Around 85% of women ovulate after taken bromocriptine or Carbergoline.
Both Bromocriptine and Cabergoline are taken by mouth(orally) like Clomid.
What is the Best fertility Drug to get Pregnant
The best Fertility drugs to get pregnant varies from women to women and how severe the fertility problems are.
It also depends on what fertility issues you have e.g PCOS, Short Luteal Phase e.t.c.
However Clomid Pills are the most common and the most prescribed Fertility Pills.
Remember 80% of women who take Clomid are able to ovulate.
But if Clomid is unsuccessful for you after 6 period cycles then your doctor will direct to another fertility medication of treatment.
Usually Doctors don't want to start with the strongest Pills but they would work out what is best for your situation.
