It is normal for every woman to have a discharge coming of her vagina.
A healthy vaginal discharge is usually clear, milky, egg white or even watery or creamy white in colour and consistency.
The discharge you get is dependent on what stage of your menstrual cycle you are in. Tracking of cervical mucus is common among women who are actively trying to conceive.
A healthy and normal discharge should have no odor and shouldn't cause any form of discomfort such as itching, burning sensation while pee or pain during and after sex.
The main purpose of a vagina discharge is to:
- Wash away dead cells from the vagina to keep it healthy.
- Protect the cervix from germs and bacteria.
- Egg white cervical mucus provides a sperm friendly environment for fertilisation during ovulation.
"So why do I have a creamy mucus and what does it mean?."
What does creamy cervical mucus mean?
Your cervical mucus changes through out your menstrual cycle. For instance, your discharge during ovulation is different from the one you get after ovulation.
A creamy cervical mucus usually means you are not fertile. This is because white creamy mucus makes it difficult for the sperm to penetrate easily to reach the egg.
Unlike the slippery and wet sperm-friendly cervical mucus produced at ovulation. The egg white CM is usually produced when you are ovulating.
And this is nature's way of making sure you get pregnant easily.
But after ovulation, some women experience no discharge at all. While others experience creamy or thick white discharge before their period.
What are all the possible causes of a creamy-whitish discharge?
normal causes creamy discharge
1. period is coming
It is normal for women to have a white creamy discharge before their period starts. The estrogen hormone start increasing around a week before your next period is due. The presence of estrogen hormone causes your cervix to secrete more discharge from the vagina.
Stress is one of the main causes of hormonal imbalance. Hormonal imbalance in women is when there is a disruption between the 2 female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone.
Stress causes cortisol to be produced. Cortisol blocks the production of progesterone hormone. A woman with low progesterone is termed to have estrogen dominance. One of the symptom of estrogen dominance is excessive white discharge.
Some women do have a thick creamy white discharge during sex. And this is normal except the creamy secretion has an unpleasant smell or its itchy.
The discharge during intercourse is due to female lubrication/orgasm which turns white when it builds up.
During orgasm, your uterus contracts which forces the cervix to produce a milky white or creamy cervical mucus.
When you get pregnant, your body will start to undergo a lot of changes. And the level of your estrogen and progesterone hormone continues to raise through out pregnancy.
Most women experience a milky white creamy vaginal discharge as an early sign of pregnancy. And the continue to get discharge through out their first, second and third trimester.
A yellow or greenish discharge in most cases signifies an infection.
When to see the doctor
If you have any of the following discharge then you should see the doctor immediately for a diagnosis.
Yeast Infection: A yellow or white clumpy discharge that is itchy is usually caused by yeast infection. The discharge resembles cottage cheese.
Bacterial Vaginosis: If you have a yellow or green discharge that has a foul fish smell then you most likely have BV. BV is caused when there is an imbalance between the good and bad bacteria in the vagina.
Trichomoniasis: Trich is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasitic organism called trichomonas vaginalis. The symptoms of Tricomoniasis are:
- A green or yellow frothy discharge that could be watery or milky in consistency.
- Smelly vagina discharge
- Itching and irritation around the vaginal and vulva
- Pain during sex
- Bleeding after intercourse
See a doctor immediately, if you have any of this symptoms. The doctor will perform an internal examination by taking samples of vaginal fluid or discharge. This is done by a swan test.
The sample collected is then sent to the lab. Where it is looked at under a microscope to determine the cause of infection.
Is Creamy vaginal discharge a sign of Pregnancy?
A creamy or milky odorless discharge before your period is due may mean two things:
- You period is approaching
There are similarities between early symptoms of pregnancy and Pre-Menstrual Syndrome(PMS). This is due to the common hormone at play in both cases. The estrogen hormone starts rising just before your period kicks in and during the first week of pregnancy.
Most women do experience milky white discharge before period and in early pregnancy.
